Joe Mixon won't play this season

Posted: Updated:
NORMAN -  Joe Mixon's freshmen season at Oklahoma is over before it even started.  The five star running back from Oakley, California was suspended for the upcoming season by the University of Oklahoma.

The suspension came on the same day he had his first court appearance where he's accused of punching a 20 year old coed in the face and breaking several bones.  OU head coach Bob Stoops was not anxious to discuss the issue after Monday's practice..

"I'm not going to address the time table, it is what it is and we made a decision here today that was announced and that's all I'm going to say about it, I'm not going to say anything else in regard to it," said Stoops..
Whether Mixon played or not there are several running backs who would be fighting to play.  A couple of sophomore's in Alex Ross and Keith Ford are the leading contenders for playing time along with true freshmen Semaje Perine.  Daniel Brooks was the star of the spring game and is in the competition along with David Smith, a redshirt sophomore who hasn't played in a game at OU.

"A lot of those guys are going to need to play for us, says OU quarterback Trevor Knight..  Semaje Perine has been a hammer in there.  Just pounding the football doing a really good job.  Keith Ford has been doing a great job.  Alex Ross has been doing a great job and Daniel Brooks  and David Smith.  And their competing as well.  It's fun to watch them compete and have fun in a scrimmage atmosphere and compete for extra yards."

The Oklahoma City Thunder traded backup center Hasheem Thabeet to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Thunder send cash and Thabeet in exchange for a protected second round pick in 2015 and a trade exception. The move saves OKC $1.25 million that they would have had to pay Thabeet if he had been on the roster August 31st. Oklahoma City now has about $2.8 million in cap space to tinker with the roster that has 14 players. It's expected Philly will waive Thabeet to avoid paying him $1.25 million.

It appears there is resolution to Frank Shannon's status on Oklahoma's football team. The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the University of Oklahoma can suspend Shannon for a year. The school suspended Shannon because he violated the school's sexual misconduct policy. He received a stay from the district court but that higher court ruled that stay should not have been granted. Shannon has not played this season and has been replaced by Jordan Evans in the starting lineup.Oklahoma head coach...
