Oklahoma City Zoo selects Indian rhino's name after online vote

Posted: Updated:
The Oklahoma City Zoo says the 3-week old Indian rhino is officially named, and it's a tribute to his mama and grandma.

The OKC Zoo held a contest in the first two weeks of July to select the name. Voters were given three choices: Garjazn, Rupert, and Russell.

The winning name was Rupert! The name is the Zoo's twist on rupee, the official currency of India. It follows the family tradition: his grandma was named Penny and mom is named Nickel (Niki for short).

From July 3 to July 13, the Zoo held a contest allowing voters to pick one of three names: Rupert, Russell, and Garjan. A total of 8,300 votes came in to the zoo and 4,244 (51%) selected Rupert, which happened to be the Keeper's favorite.

Russell, chosen to honor Mr. Westbrook, came in second with 28% of the vote while Garjan, Hindi for thunder and roaring, got 21%.

To celebrate his new name and 1-month birthday on Saturday, the Zoo has festivities for the weekend. The first 300 children to enter the Zoo on Saturday and Sunday get party favors; Keeper Connections will be hosted at Rupert and Niki's habitat; plus, each purchase at the zoo is able to rounded up to support rhino conservation.
