Fox at Five: State Supreme Court upholds Common Core repeal

Posted: Updated:
Common Core is officially out in Oklahoma after the State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the law that repeals the educational standards.

The state's highest court took the action Tuesday a little more than four hours after attorneys presented oral arguments in a lawsuit that challenged the Legislature's action.

As the justices were listening to arguments and deciding on the ruling, 5,000 educators met at a conference downtown. One session was devoted to creating new testing standards that will replace common core. That process will take two years. Until it's finished, Oklahoma will revert back to old standards that were widely criticized.

It feels like fall but this is mid-July! Unseasonably cool temperatures will continue through Thursday as a stronger system looks to be coming down in the northwest flow tonight through Thursday with widespread rainfall. There is some potential for local flooding as clouds and rain will keep temps way below average. If it rains on and all day, we could stay in the 70s.

By the time we get to the weekend, though, those temps will be back in the 90s! What a week!

Several earthquakes rocked central and northern Oklahoma early Tuesday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the first happened near Harrah around 2:20 a.m. It was a 3.8 magnitude.

The second earthquake measured a 3.9 magnitude happened around 4:10 a.m. in the same general area.

We had several calls to the newsroom of people who felt the quake.  So far there are reports of some damage to the Ace Hardware Store in Harrah as well as the Harrah Police Department. According to Chief Gary Morgan, there was some minor damage.

"We had most of the minor damage throughout the downtown area with the glass breakage," Chief Morgan said.

Tony Landrith manages Ace Hardware. He says when he arrived at work, he and his employees had a lot of work to do to get open.

"Items all over the floor. We had ceiling tiles in the back in ceiling tiles in the front am I going to get those replaced today, so everything should be back to normal," Landrith said.

Tonight on the Primetime News at Nine, we'll tell you about the cleanup process that's underway.

A man was arrested at the Tulsa Airport Monday for exposing himself.

Matthew Hutson was caught on surveillance cameras just after 4 a.m. Monday. He admitted to officers that he pulled his pants down and exposed himself.

The police report states Hutson is an employee with a janitorial service contracted through the airport.

He posted bond and was released from jail.

Governor Mary Fallin will need to fill one of her cabinet positions. The State Secretary of Education, Robert Sommers, announced he's stepping down on Aug. 15.

Sommers was tabbed as the Governor's top education adviser in July 2013.

“Seeing a broken violin is nothing new to me,” Kyle Dillingham said turning to the shelf of those violins waiting for repair. “They’re all over the place, this is a pretty bad break,” he said pulling out a violin with gaping hole in its shell.  Sometimes a ‘bad break’ is just that for the instrument. Those violins where the repair cost exceeds the replacement value are deemed ‘broken beyond repair.’
