Custer County escapee caught in Warr Acres

Posted: Updated:
A Custer County Jail escapee is back in custody almost one day after he escaped by stealing a car while picking up trash in Arapaho.

Nicholas Todd Van Brunt, 36, was working as a trustee, picking up trash at the sheriff's office in Arapaho Sunday when authorities say he stole a car around 10:00 AM Sunday. According to officials, the car's owner left the keys in the ignition.

Authorities say Van Brunt was spotted at the Weatherford Walmart around 1:15 PM Sunday but he was gone before police arrived. Law enforcement say Van Brunt ditched the car he stole from the sheriff's office about 20 miles north of Arapaho and stole another vehicle from the Walmart parking lot.

Officials say they had information that Van Brunt was using a cell phone. The phone pinged at a home in Warr Acres. Police arrived Monday morning and took Van Brunt into custody.

They said they also found the vehicle stolen from the Walmart parking lot.
