State superintendent candidates hear from the community

OKLAHOMA CITY - Five of the seven candidates running for State Superintendent of Education met on the Oklahoma City University campus to hear from community members, parents and teachers.

The session was hosted by Voices Organized in Civic Engagement (VOICE) and the five candidates were not allowed to give speeches and instead listened to the issues most important to the over 1,000 in attendance.

Candidate Joy Hofmeister was the only Republic candidate at the session. VOICE says both current Janet Barresi and challenger Brian Kelly were invited.

"It's exciting to see students in middle school and high school engaged in our process of the election and also engaged in sharing their voice on how to solve the problems that they are right in the middle of," Hofmeister said.

Democratic candidates Jack Herron, Ivan Holmes, John Cox and Freda Deskin were also in attendance.
Democratic candidate for governor Joe Dorman was also in attendance at the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, the Statewide Parent Teacher Association encouraged all candidates to attend.

"Non-partisan events such as the VOICE's candidate forum ensure that voters are able to make informed decisions at the polls." said Jeffrey Corbett, president of the Statewide PTA.
