Rev. Jesse Jackson headed to Moore to support storm shelter petition

Posted: Updated:
MOORE - Civil rights leader, Reverend Jesse Jackson, will be in Moore Wednesday, June 4, to support a new petition to put storm shelters in Oklahoma schools.

It’s been a little more than a year since seven children died in the Moore tornado. Wednesday's conference will take place on the SE corner of the school ravaged by that tornado, Plaza Towers Elementary.

The group, “Take Shelter Oklahoma,” will launch their newest petition to place storm shelters in every public school in Oklahoma.

This is the group’s second attempt to get the issue on the November ballot.

The new initiative petition will still call for a $500 million bond issue to fund the shelters, but shifts the source of the funds to the state’s General Revenue Fund.

Supporters will have 90 days to gather 155,000 signatures.

Civil rights leader, Reverend Jesse Jackson, will be at the launch.  The kick-off will be at the corner of 14th and Eagle, starting at 2:45 p.m.
