Surprise delivery -- baby raccoons -- at NY agency

Posted: Updated:
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- New York health officials say someone left five well-fed baby raccoons on the doorstep of a county health department and that person should call to be assessed for the possibility of rabies.

The month-old raccoons were delivered Friday to the Westchester County Health Department's office in Mount Kisco in a cage with bottles of milk, blankets and toys. They appeared to have been well cared for and nurtured.

But while they are cute, they also raise concerns because raccoons are among the most common carriers of rabies. The disease is fatal if not quickly treated.

Meanwhile, the babies have been placed with a wildlife rehabilitator.
