Oklahoma City School releases plan to help third grader readers

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY - After disappointing test scores for the district, Oklahoma City Public Schools released a plan to help students who are struggling in reading.

This year, 27 percent of third graders in OKCPS scored unsatisfactory on the state required reading test.  Passing the test is required to move to the fourth grade.

Oklahoma City Public Schools interim superintendent Dave Lopez said the district has a five-point strategy to help.

"Our immediate focus is on doing all we can to assist students to be strong readers now and prepare them for reading in the future," Lopez said in a press release. "We can't rest until we do all we can so that a student's difficulty in reading today does not determine that child's destiny. The responsibility is on the adults, educators, parents and the District."

The first program is Teach for America Summer University which begins June 9th.  More than 900 students are enrolled in courses which will help strengthen reading skills, the district said.

On June 9th, the Summer STEAM Academy at FD Moon also begins. In July, the district will begin a 3rd Grade Summer Reading Academy.

OKCPS is starting a pilot program with Payne Education Center, which will provide 16 additional reading coaches and summer training opportunities for teachers at 11 elementary schools.

Lastly, the district said it will increase the English Language Learner staff at schools beginning next school year.

While they work to get reading skills up, OKCPS said it will also work to file exemptions for students.  The district believes as many as 259 students could qualify for good cause exemptions:

Good Cause Exemption #1 (pertains to English language learners) - 76 students
Good Cause Exemption #2 (Oklahoma Alternative Assessment Program) - 61 students
Good Cause Exemption #5 (special education students who have been retained once) - 115 students
Good Cause Exemption #6 (students who have been retained twice) - 7 students
