President of testing company appears in front of state board

Posted: Updated:
The chief executive officer of McGraw-Hill, the company in charge of state testing in Oklahoma, is expected to answer questions from the State Board of Education Thursday afternoon.

Ellen Haley will appear in front of the board after testing problems Monday forced state leaders to suspend state exams. The disruptions affected 8,100 students, many in the middle of exams.

“It’s intolerable,” state superintendent Janet Barresi said about the problems. “I’m outraged. The districts have done everything we’ve asked them to do.”

“A second year of disruptions is absolutely unacceptable,” Barresi told board members.

Barresi said the company had accepted responsibility for the problems and would answer to the board for the issues.

A piece of hardware malfunctioned, leading to the outage that was nationwide, Barresi said.

She said Monday she would not recommend renewal of the contract with McGraw Hill.
