Arkansas teacher caught on camera dragging student by ankles

Posted: Updated:

An Arkansas teacher is on leave after police say she was caught on camera dragging a special needs student by the ankles.

In the surveillance footage from March 31, you can see the MicroSociety Magnet School teacher Linda Stephens and the student struggling with each other as they come around a corner.

The 9-year-old boy falls and appears to try and scoot away from the teacher, but Stephens can be seen grabbing the student's ankles and pulling him back around the corner and into her classroom.

Police reports state the incident started when the special needs student refused to go to class.

The teacher was charged with misdemeanor second degree assault. Officers were contacted after school administrators saw the surveillance video and contacted the Department of Human Services.

The DHS report states three staff members witnessed the incident. One staff member said he went to Stephens' classroom where he saw her on the floor holding the student's ankles.

The witness said the student tried several times to get past him to leave the room and at one point even charged the witness, hitting him in the chest. The witness also told investigators he was worried the student would hurt the teacher.

The boy told investigators he was embarrassed because the class laughed at him.

A law firm issued a statement on behalf of the boys family which reads:

"These days, when you send your child to school, there are a lot of things to worry about. We just never thought our child being assaulted by his own teacher was one of them."
