Bethel Acres rebuilds playground after May tornadoes

Bethel Acres rebuilds playground after May tornadoes

Posted: Updated:
BETHEL ACRES -

With shovels, hammers and a little bit of elbow grease, a new playground for Bethel Acres was born where tornado debris once stood.

"We are totally excited," said Glenna Steward. "We've needed this for a long time."

Nearly 200 volunteers partnered with the group "KaBoom" to build the park. Glenna Steward came out with her two kids. She says she wanted to give back to the community.

"After the tornadoes, I was really taken aback by how much everybody helped out and jumped in and lost sleep just because their neighbors needed them,"

The park will have the regular park stuff---things like swings and a jungle gym.

"Today, we've about done it all," said Eric Garnard. He's the leader of Boy Scout Troop 424.

But volunteers like Garnard and his two dozen boy scout helpers put in a covered pavilion, picnic tables and plenty of park benches as well.

"It was just really neat to watch everything come from boxes to playground," Garnard said.

He says the special thing about the new park is it's built by the same people who will use it---folks from the Bethel Acres area.

"The community is what it's about."

A community hit by mother nature, but rebuilt by neighbors.

"That's the best part about this whole thing. Is because here in Bethel we have such a tight knit community we all play sports together and all our kids know each other so it's really neat to see everyone come together," Garnard said.
