Texas man wants to break Ellen's retweet record

Texas man wants to break Ellen's retweet record

Posted: Updated:

On Sunday, Ellen DeGeneres tweeted a selfie to 25 million followers in hopes of breaking the retweet record held by President Obama.

It worked and she broke the record before the show even ended. By Wednesday, more than 3,270,000 Twitter users retweeted it.

Ellen's tweet sparked similar hopes by twitter users. Now, a random guy from Texas is joining the fray, and he's picking up steam.

Terry Shipman, a small business owner in Beaumont, Texas, tweeted out a selfie around 6:00 PM Tuesday night and wrote "Let's see if we can beat the Oscar re-tweets!"

By 4:00 PM Wednesday, he had over 82,500 retweets.

While he's still got a long ways to go to catch up to Ellen, his tweet has been picked up by several news agencies. He told Mashable "I just sent something to my son that I thought he would get a kick out of and it goes viral."
