NICHOLS HILLS -

A 4-year-old boy has died after being hit by a SUV outside a Nichols Hills school.

Police say the accident happened around 8:00 a.m. outside Christ the King Catholic School near Pennsylvania and Wilshire.

The accident happened in the parking lot of the school in the drop off area.

Oklahoma City Police on the scene tell FOX 25's Danielle Dupuy that the boy was being dropped off at the school by his father when the vehicle he climbed out of somehow ran him over.

Police originally said the boy had gotten stuck as he was climbing out of the vehicle but just before 5:00 PM said the traffic investigator said that was not the case. Police have not released a reason the boy was hit and killed at this time.

Police say the boy died at the scene and are calling it a tragic accident.

"Obviously this is a very tragic and unfortunate accident. We do have investigators here looking into this incident, but at this time we do believe its just a very tragic accident," OKC Police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said.

The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City released a statement on the child's death saying
Cris Carter, Ph.D., superintendent of Catholic schools, spoke to the family.

"This is an occasion of great sorrow for all of us," Carter said. "My heart breaks for the family, whom we love and appreciate so dearly. Our support and prayers are with them and with the school and parish community, even as we grieve alongside them."

The school and church made counselors available for anyone who needs to speak with them, including those children who witnessed the event.

The archbishop said he will offer Mass for the boy and his family at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Saint Francis de Sales Chapel at the Catholic Pastoral Center in Oklahoma City.
