New proposals would restrict anyone under 21 from buying tobacco

Posted: Updated:

Two states are considering a crackdown on tobacco by raising the smoking age to 21.

Utah and Colorado lawmakers both voted for the proposals Thursday.

If passed, the laws would equate tobacco to alcohol making it illegal to purchase before the age of 21.

While both proposals face several more votes, they are the most restrictive in the nation to cut down on teens' access to cigarettes.

Doctors say about 90% of cigarettes purchased for minors are obtained by people between 18 and 20 years old.
