Moore police request OSBI assistance for in-custody death investigation

Posted: Updated:

The Moore Police Department has asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for assistance in the investigation into the death of Luis Rodriguez.

Luis Rodriguez died early Saturday morning after he was detained at the Warren Theatre in Moore. Police held a press conference Tuesday to discuss the death and said Rodriguez was handcuffed because he failed to cooperate.

Officers were called to the theater Saturday night and say Rodriguez made statements that made them believe the altercation was a case of domestic violence. The responding officers said he failed to cooperate with them and sprayed him with pepper spray before handcuffing him.

Police say Luis' wife, Nair Rodriguez, recorded the incident on her cell phone. Police say the reviewed the video and say the officers did not have any malicious intent. They're asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Oklahoma State Rep. Mike Shelton called on OSBI to take over the investigation on Wednesday saying that OSBI needs to step in to insure the investigation is impartial.
