A new doll set to go on sale next month is drawing a ton of criticism.

The Nenuco Won't Eat doll reportedly mimics the actions of a real baby but campaigners have claimed a doll that refuses food promotes anorexia.

The Nenuco Won't Eat toy features a mechanism that shakes the doll's head whenever attempts are made to feed her.

A magnet in the feeding spoon keeps the doll's mouth firmly shut and turns her head away whenever offered food.

The maker of the toy, Spanish company Famosa, claims the doll mimics the scenario of a mother struggling to get their baby to eat and is designed to teach children about real life.

However, eating disorder charities like SWEDA say the toy sends out a subliminal message that encourages girls to refuse food.

However Nikki Jeffery, Famosa's UK marketing director, said: "We know that children often don't eat what they are given, but the doll is designed to show them how important it is that they eat properly."

"It is about enabling young girls to have the closest experience possible to being a 'real mum." We are not encouraging children not to eat."

The doll is set to go on sale in the UK in February.
