Design for Satanic Monument unveiled

OKLAHOMA CITY -

Some Oklahomans are outraged at the thought of a satanic monument at the state capitol.

"That's ridiculous. I think that's real ridiculous," said Mary Goudeau.

A satanic temple based in New York wants to donate the statue to the state.  Monday the group unveiled designs for the seven foot-tall goat-headed deity.

"That doesn't say anything about the state of Oklahoma," Mary said.
The monument features a bearded, goat-headed demon sitting in a pentagram-adorned throne with children smiling next to him.

"It's the devil doing his job trying to deceive young people," said David Chandler.

In a statement a spokesperson for the group said "More than anything, our monument is symbolic of a proud culture of tolerance and free inquiry. This is to be a historical marker commemorating the scapegoats, the marginalized, the demonized minority, and the unjustly outcast."

The state preservation commission would not speak on camera but says it has not received a request from the satanic temple for the statue. The panel is not considering any new requests for monuments while a lawsuit against the existing 10-commandments monument is pending.

"I think it would be equal opportunity," said Jared Campos.

But not everybody is against the statue. Jared Campos said  the state put itself in this position by allowing the 10-commandments at the Capitol.

"I think it opens the flood gates for other people to say hey we want our stuff on their too."

Still many Oklahomans want their voices heard.

"I think it's ridiculous. I mean why you would put a satanic monument in front of the state capitol,"said Mary.

"For us to be the Bible belt, come on now. We have to make a stand. Take a stand as a state," added David.
