OKC Public Schools cancels classes because of dangerous cold

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

The single digit temperatures have forced several schools to cancel classes Monday morning.

Oklahoma City Public Schools canceled classes around 6:45 a.m. and sent out the following statement:

"OKCPS is canceling all classes and activities Monday, January 6th due to the unusually low and dangerous below zero wind chill."

The last minute decision was somewhat controversial, coming just an hour before many schools were about to start instruction for the semester.

"While everybody's all ready to go and everything," Mark Oberlander said as he waited for a city bus. "I don't think there is really an excuse why the kids didn't have to go to school today."

While many others braved the cold to catch a bus, there were mixed reviews on whether school children needed to wait outside in low temperatures to catch theirs.

"I had to do it," Dez Horn said.

While another rider said he takes the first bus out at 6:00 a.m. and knows just how cold it would be for children, who cannot handle low temperatures as well.

OKCPS Interim Superintendent Dave Lopez apologized for any inconvenience but said it was better safe than sorry.

"It's a disruption and an inconvenience but I'd much rather be criticized for that, than anything that would be serious that could hurt a child," he said.

OKCPS has seven snow days built in to its school year. Monday was day four.

Back in 2006, Oklahoma became the last state to legalize tattoo parlors, but teens are still not allowed to get inked. That's not stopping many young people, sometimes finding themselves in dangerous situations simply because they can't wait a few months or years to get tattooed legally.
