Six year old suspended for kissing classmate's hand

Six year old suspended for kissing classmate's hand

Posted: Updated:

A six-year-old boy is sent home from his school in Colorado Springs after he apparently kissed a classmate. His mom is fighting to get Hunter back in class.

"It was during class yeah. We were doing reading group. And I leaned over and kissed her on the hand. That's what happened," Hunter said.

That action, landed Hunter at home instead of in school. He says he knows why they sent him home.

"I did something wrong.  They sent me to the office, fair and square. I feel sorry."

His mom, Jennifer, says the school overreacted.

"She was fine with it, they are "boyfriend and girlfriend"". The other children saw it and went to the music teacher. That was the day I had the meeting with the principal, where she first said sexual harassment," Jennifer said. "This is taking it to an extreme that doesn't need to be met with a 6 year old.  Now my son is asking questions; what is sex mommy? It should not ever be said, sex, in a sentence with a 6 year old."

Hunter and his mom admit he's had trouble in school in the past: he's been suspended for rough-housing and for kissing the same girl on the cheek. And when he's returned home, he was punished there too.

"We've been working with him with the classroom disruption. He was grounded for awhile. Big restrictions," Jennifer said.

"I have a lot of energy," Hunter said. "I mean six year olds. They have a lot of energy!"

The school's superintendent said says Hunter's records will remain within the district and his actions fit the school policy description of 'sexual harassment'.

Jessica says the suspension isn't necessarily the problem.

"How can you do this? How can you say this about my child?  Remove sexual harassment, remove it from his record.  I'm need to stand up and fight for him, because that's not the case, that's not what happened at all.

A child clinical psychologist says it's normal for six-year-old boys to try to kiss girls. She believes suspending him and calling it sexual harassment sends a mixed message to kids and the school should have used it as a learning opportunity.
