Sex offender asks for castration as punishment

Posted: Updated:

An alleged child sex offender in Massachusetts has asked for an unusual request for punishment for his crimes: castration.

Prosecutors want John Burbine spend 100 years behind bars for sexually assaulting dozens of children at a day care center. But Burbine's attorney asked for a different punishment in court on Wednesday. He wants 15 years in prison plus castration.

"We asked for funds, money to gets what's called the bilateral orchiectomy, which means they would take out the testicles and the result of that being he would lose all sexual ability, function and desire," his attorney said.

His trial hasn't been scheduled so the judge denied the request but left the door open for the possibility once there's a verdict.

Burbine's attorney admits the idea is an effort to see if prosecutors are interested in negotiating a deal.

"What we're trying to do is flesh out, can we make a deal and is there a plea?"

But the DA said in court Wednesday the offer wouldn't change their sentencing recommendation.
