Caught on camera: Alabama cop drag races police motorcycle

Posted: Updated:

A police officer in Montgomery, Alabama has turned in his resignation after agreeing to two drag races with a motorcyclist and they were both caught on camera.

Montgomery Chief Kevin Murphy says he's embarrassed by the unnamed officer's actions and accepted his resignation before he was fired.

The five-minute video starts with the motorcyclist, Lawrence Spillers pulling up to the uniformed officer at a red light. They talk about their bikes and then he asks the officer if he wants to race. The Officer said "I got turbo" and the light turned green.

The two take off and, according to Spillers, they didn't go any faster than 60 MPH. When they came to another red light, the officer said "let's try it again". When that light turned green, they both hit the throttle and took off.

The officer involved could face charges, according the Chief Murphy.

"There may be a traffic violation charge against this former officer for drag racing and the elements are there, one just has to look at the video and see for themselves," Murphy said.

Spiller says he thinks the officer was just having some fun on the job.

"I think the officer was just trying to have fun," Spillers said. "I don't think he should be charged with anything and I don't think he should have lost his job."

Chief Murphy said the officer should have told the motorcyclist that it's illegal and declined the race.
