A 13-year-old Kansas eighth-grader says he was suspended from school because he refused to take off his Vera Bradley purse.

Skylar Davis is an eighth-grader a Anderson County Junior/Senior High SChool and insists on wearing the purse.

"It expresses myself and everyone else can wear it, so I can wear it as well," Skylar said.

A member of the faculty disagrees and Skylar says he was summoned to the Assistant Principal's office.

"I was told to go put it up and I went to the office and I refused to take it off, and they suspended me."

The school then called Skylar's mom, Leslie Willis.

"I was furious. Then I called to confirm the story. It was true, he refused to take off his Vera Bradley bag, nothing more to it," Leslie said.

She says she scanned the student handbook which makes no mention of bags or purses. She questions the decision to suspend her son and also the timing

"Skylar's been going to school, every morning, with that same Vera Bradley bag on, has not taken it off. What happened today?"

The school did not respond to request for statement for the story.

Skylar's friends and family are supporting his decision to carry the purse, especially since, according to them, girls get to carry their purses on campus.

Dakota Haight is his brother and says he shouldn't have been kicked out of school.

"I've seen girls at school where short shorts. Why don't they kicked out? He gets kicked out for a purse? It's not right."

Skylar says he wants everyone to be treated the same.

"I don't think anyone should be treated differently. Everyone should have the same privileges."
