Nearly united House backs new water projects bill

Nearly united House backs new water projects bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After weeks of intense partisan fights, the House is showing it can come together on major legislation after all.

Republicans and Democrats acted in near unison on Wednesday, voting 417-3 to pass an $8.2 billion bill that sketches out water projects for the next decade.

The House brushed aside criticism from outside conservative groups like FreedomWorks and Heritage Action for America, many of which backed the government shutdown and opposed the water bill because it didn't do enough to curb spending.

Members of both parties say the vote shows House members can work together on legislation even after a bitter fight over the shutdown and a potential federal default.

House Speaker John Boehner says it's an example of the People's House working on a bill that can improve the economy.
