Government shutdown cancels Red River Rivalry tradition

A unique tradition celebrated by the students, fans, players, and coaches at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas will not happen this year.

OU told FOX 25's Jordann Lucero Tuesday that the Sooners will not be handing off the football to members of ROTC to run it to Texas.

Traditionally, the head coaches of both the Sooners and Longhorns hand the ball to a member of ROTC who then starts the run to Dallas. They then hand the ball off to more members until it finally arrives at the Cotton Bowl.

On Tuesday, OU confirmed the government shutdown is forcing them to discontinue the tradition for the year.

Texas officials say they're waiting until Wednesday to decide if they will discontinue as well.
