OKLAHOMA CITY -

Four months after Moore, Oklahoma City, and Newcastle were devastated by an EF5 tornado, the leader of Oklahoma City is recommending some changes to protect students and teachers.

Over a two-week period in July, OKC Mayor Mick Cornett's Severe Storm Safety Task Force met to discuss response to the tornadoes and how to protect residents in the future. Members of the task for included Mayor Mick Cornett, State Superintendent Dr. Janet Barresi, City of Oklahoma City Ward 4 Councilmember Pete White, City of Oklahoma City Ward 5 Councilmember David Greenwell, Harold Roberts, Chief Operating Officer of ASTEC Charter Schools, Glenn Short, Principal, Frankfurt-Short-Bruza Architects Engineers, Xavier Niera with Manhattan Construction, and Harold Brooks of the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

The task force recommended several actions for the city to take including ways to improve city sirens, have the fire department inspect schools and offer recommendations on enhancing safety, and have all 24 schools install safe rooms or tornado shelters.

7 students at Plaza Towers Elementary in Moore died when the school took a direct hit.
