Cuts will soon be coming for those who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

The Oklahoma Department of Human services says the cuts to food stamps will begin November 1.

"This will be the most dramatic change in SNAP cuts in recent years" says Mark Beutler, a spokesperson for DHS.

The SNAP program's benefits were increased in 2009 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, however those benefits will expire at the end of October.

These cuts are expected to hit Oklahomans hard.

"It's a struggle, it seems like groceries go up and up every year" says Samantha Murphy, a mother of two.

Beutler says the cuts are coming from the federal level and will total 66 million dollars.

Beutler says a family of four, with no income, will see thirty-six dollars less in their monthly food benefits.

"It's really difficult for us at DHS to have to tell people they have to stretch their dollars even more when they're already strapped and stretching it as far as they can" says Beutler.

As of now, over 600 thousand Oklahomans rely on the state to help feed their families.
