Before Saturday's season opener against Mississippi State, Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy announced Clint Chelf would start at quarterback. It might be the last time for a while that happens.

Chelf played only two series before being yanked for sophomore J.W. Walsh.  The move paid off.  Walsh ran for 125 yards and scored a touchdown in OSU's 21-3 win over the Bulldogs.  Walsh also threw for 135 yards and looked dynamic at times, obviously giving the Cowboys an added dimension against an SEC defense.

After the game, Gundy named Walsh the starter for next week's match-up with the Universtiy of Texas-San Antonio.

Not to be outdone on offense was Jeremy Smith.  Smith ran for 102 yards and scored two touchdowns.

"The running game that was added to our offense by Coach Yurcich really played to his favor today because Mississippi State failed to defend it," Gundy said in the post game conference.

But the story of the game was the defense. Glenn Spencer's first game as coordinator proved a home run.  After struggling early on allowing Mississippi State to go right down the field for a field goal, OSU settled in.  The Cowboys held Mississippi State to 2-16 on 3rd down conversions.  That was a big issue a year ago under former coordinator Bill Young.  The OSU defense also forced 2 interceptions and had 3 sacks.

"We made a lot of big plays today. Our guys played hard and I am proud of them," Spencer said.

The Cowboys are back in Texas next week, when they play UTSA in the Alamodome.  Kickoff set for 11:00 am.
