OU, OSU make preseason USA Today top 25

Posted: Updated:

The cream of the Big 12 crop is right here in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State and the University of Oklahoma both make the preseason USA Today Top 25 Poll.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys checked in at number 14 on the top 25 poll while the OU Sooners picked up spot number 16. Sandwiched between the two is Texas. Only one other Big 12 team made the top 25 and that was TCU which was picked as number 20.

Oklahoma State was tabbed by the media as the Big 12 favorite in the preseason poll, followed by TCU, Oklahoma, Texas, and then Baylor, which did not make the top 25.

Oklahoma split the Big 12 championship with Kansas State last year, despite losing to the Wildcats in Norman.

Other notes:
Alabama received 58 of 62 first-place votes and is going for its third straight national championship...5 of the top 10 are SEC teams which have won the last seven national championships...Kansas State and Baylor are the two closest teams in the Big 12 to making the top preseason top 25.

The Oklahoma City Thunder traded backup center Hasheem Thabeet to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Thunder send cash and Thabeet in exchange for a protected second round pick in 2015 and a trade exception. The move saves OKC $1.25 million that they would have had to pay Thabeet if he had been on the roster August 31st. Oklahoma City now has about $2.8 million in cap space to tinker with the roster that has 14 players. It's expected Philly will waive Thabeet to avoid paying him $1.25 million.

When discussing Florida State, Oklahoma State's opening opponent, there are many ways to say they're good. They're the defending National Champs. They won all 14 games last season and they've got 14 starters returning from that team. They're preseason number one in all the polls. They've got the defending Heisman Trophy winner. Seven of their players are either first or second team All American according to USA Today. I could go on with more but OSU head coach Mike Gundy has another way to sh...

Before the season started the Oklahoma defense was billed as being deep in the defensive line with plenty of big play ability at linebacker and a secondary that was young at safety. After Saturday's 32 point win over Louisiana Tech they proved worthy of that assessment. Louisiana Tech quarterback Cody Sokol spent much of the game running for his life as the OU defense spent much of the game in the Bulldog backfield."They together were really good. Many people will say you can't get anything out of beating an overmatched opponent.  Oklahoma did play an overmatched Louisiana Tech team but they did what you're supposed to do.  They dominated from the start and won a game that wasn't as close as even a 48-16 blowout suggests it was.
