8-year K9 veteran laid to rest Thursday

Posted: Updated:

On Monday, the Oklahoma County Sheriff lost a retired member of its K9 unit. But any officer will tell you the dogs do more than detect drugs, bombs, and find criminals; they're part of the force.

And the sheriff sent Eron off the same as other officer.

Deputy Eron was an eight-year veteran of the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office. On Monday, he was euthanized due to arthritis and hip dysplasia. On Thursday, he was laid to rest as friends looked on.

He spent time with two handlers: Retired Sergeant Kyle Kilgore and Deputy Clyde Carter was his most recent partner of five years.

Before arthritis and hip dysplasia, the county says Eron enjoyed chewing on plastic water bottles and was given soccer balls of other officers, despite Deputy Carter's caution that it wouldn't last. They were typically destroyed in 30 seconds. But according to the department, his favorite chew toy was a 4x4 piece of wood which will be buried with him.
