Bob Stoops talks defense

DALLAS -

Oklahoma was a featured team on the final day of Big 12 Media Days. The Sooners are picked to finish second in the conference with many having questions about their defense.

"It's still a work in progress," said Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops. "Definitely, in some of our schemes a year ago, we were more coverage conscious, and it hurt us in the run game.

Despite the struggles on defense Stoops is optimistic about the possibilities for this season.

"We are very excited about the talent and ability of some of the young players coming up that we're still developing, still polishing, still trying to improve skills," Stoops said.

"They're working hard at it. So I believe we have a chance to make improvement there."

Before the season started the Oklahoma defense was billed as being deep in the defensive line with plenty of big play ability at linebacker and a secondary that was young at safety. After Saturday's 32 point win over Louisiana Tech they proved worthy of that assessment. Louisiana Tech quarterback Cody Sokol spent much of the game running for his life as the OU defense spent much of the game in the Bulldog backfield."They together were really good. Many people will say you can't get anything out of beating an overmatched opponent.  Oklahoma did play an overmatched Louisiana Tech team but they did what you're supposed to do.  They dominated from the start and won a game that wasn't as close as even a 48-16 blowout suggests it was.

The Oklahoma City Thunder traded backup center Hasheem Thabeet to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Thunder send cash and Thabeet in exchange for a protected second round pick in 2015 and a trade exception. The move saves OKC $1.25 million that they would have had to pay Thabeet if he had been on the roster August 31st. Oklahoma City now has about $2.8 million in cap space to tinker with the roster that has 14 players. It's expected Philly will waive Thabeet to avoid paying him $1.25 million.
