Sooners introduce Pete Hughes as baseball coach

NORMAN -

When the boys of summer hit the diamond in Norman next spring, they'll have a new skipper.

Pete Hughes was formally introduced as the new Oklahoma Sooners baseball head coach on Thursday in Norman, taking over for Sunny Golloway who won 40 games or more in 7 of his 9 seasons.

Hughes has been in the coaching business for 17 years and has compiled a 524-385-2 record including going 4-4 in the postseason. Prior to being named the Sooners head coach, Hughes was the Virginia Tech skipper.

His first season with the Hokies finished at 23-31 in 2007. In his seven years, he compiled 5 straight winning seasons culminating his best year yet this past spring. In 2013, the Hokies went 40-22 and landed a berth in the NCAA Tournament, their second with Hughes at the helm.

"Pete Hughes is an ideal choice as our new baseball coach," said University of Oklahoma president David L. Boren. "He is not only a talented coach, above all, he shares the best values of our university family. He will be a player-oriented coach. We enthusiastically welcome him to OU."

His turnaround at Boston College was even more dramatic. Before he took over the Golden Eagles, BC had a 17-23-1 record in 1998. By 2000, his team was 35-20. In 2005, he led the team to a school-record 37 victories.

The Oklahoma City Thunder traded backup center Hasheem Thabeet to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Thunder send cash and Thabeet in exchange for a protected second round pick in 2015 and a trade exception. The move saves OKC $1.25 million that they would have had to pay Thabeet if he had been on the roster August 31st. Oklahoma City now has about $2.8 million in cap space to tinker with the roster that has 14 players. It's expected Philly will waive Thabeet to avoid paying him $1.25 million.
