OU Softball nominated for two ESPY awards

Posted: Updated:

Two weeks after winning a national championship, the University of Oklahoma softball team has been nominated for two ESPY awards by ESPN.

The 21st annual awards are set for July 17 at 8:00 p.m. and the Sooners are nominated for Best Team while Keilani Ricketts is up for Best Female College Athlete.

Fan voting is underway right now for Best Team and you can push the Sooners to win the award by voting here. But once the show starts, you gotta hit Twitter to give OU your vote. Just use the hashtag ESPYSBestTeam followed by Oklahoma Sooners. At the end of the show, ESPN will combine the votes from the website and Twitter to determine the winner.

OU has some stiff competition though: the U.S. Women's Gymnastics team, the San Francisco Giants, the University of Alabama football team, the Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Miami Heat are all nominated.

In two decades of awards, two college programs have ever won Best Team. The most recent team to do it was the Oklahoma football team in 2001 after winning the national championship.

Many people will say you can't get anything out of beating an overmatched opponent.  Oklahoma did play an overmatched Louisiana Tech team but they did what you're supposed to do.  They dominated from the start and won a game that wasn't as close as even a 48-16 blowout suggests it was.

The college football season is underway for a few teams and it'll get going for everyone on the final Saturday in August. Florida State is the preseason number one team in the country and they've got 14 starters from last season's team that won all 14 games. What possibly could they have to worry about? The Oklahoma City Thunder traded backup center Hasheem Thabeet to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Thunder send cash and Thabeet in exchange for a protected second round pick in 2015 and a trade exception. The move saves OKC $1.25 million that they would have had to pay Thabeet if he had been on the roster August 31st. Oklahoma City now has about $2.8 million in cap space to tinker with the roster that has 14 players. It's expected Philly will waive Thabeet to avoid paying him $1.25 million.
