Red Cross Needs Your Help
Each year the American Red Cross helps thousands of people in need but now the organization needs some help of its own. The Red Cross of Western and Central Oklahoma is looking for volunteers.
The organization already has more than 1,000 volunteers in the region but still needs more.
Organizers say tornado season is just around the corner and that means they need to be prepared if and when disaster strikes.
“We just really want to make sure we have plenty of volunteers that are ready just in case a tornado was to hit our 47 county region so we can respond almost immediately after a storm hits,” said Ken Garcia, spokesperson for the organization.
Next month The Red Cross of Central and Western Oklahoma will take part in a multi-state drill across Texas and Oklahoma.
The agency is urging volunteers to sign up now so they can participate in the drill.
You must be over 18 to volunteer.
The Red Cross is holding a class for new volunteers on March 19th.
You can sign up to volunteer at the Red Cross’s website www.okc.redcross.org.

Power of Moore tornado dwarfs Hiroshima bomb
May 21, 2013 18:31 GMT
By SETH BORENSTEIN AP Science Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) --
Wind, humidity and rainfall combined precisely to create the massive killer tornado in Moore, Okla. And when they did, the awesome amount of energy released over that city dwarfed the power of the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima.
Meteorologists contacted by The Associated Press used real time measurements to calculate the energy released during the storm's life span of almost an hour. Their estimates ranged from 8 times to more than 600 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.
Scientists know the key ingredients that go into a devastating tornado. But they are struggling to figure out why they develop in some big storms and not others. They also are still trying to determine what effects, if any, global warming has on tornadoes.
