Former Member of Westboro Baptist Church Apologizes to Mother of Soldier

A former member of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas apologized to the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan in an interview with Anderson Cooper on his talk show Anderson Live on Wednesday.

Libby Phelps Alvarez apologized to Sherry and Randy Wyatt for picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers like their son. Alvarez is the granddaughter of Fred Phelps, the group's founder.

"I just feel sad...and, I'm sorry," Alvarez told Cooper. "I thought I was doing the right thing...but I was just hurting people."

Westboro members set up picket lines outside soldier's funerals and hold signs that say things such as "Thanks God for IEDs".

Alvarez recently left the church and she's not alone. Several other members of the Phelps family have defected recently.

"Our son died to ensure freedom of assembly, to ensure freedom of speech, to ensure freedoms for those that are white, black, gay, straight, rich, poor," Sherry Wyatt said to Alvarez.

Wife guilty in Nichols Hills fire chief slaying
May 22, 2013 00:24 GMT

EL RENO, Okla. (AP) -- A jury in El Reno has convicted Rebecca Bryan of the murder of her husband, Nichols Hills Fire Chief Keith Bryan, and recommended a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Jurors reached the Tuesday verdict after about four hours of deliberation.

The 54-year-old Bryan claimed an intruder had shot her husband, though police found her Ruger pistol in a clothes dryer in their home after the shooting.

The gun was matched to the bullet used to shoot Keith Bryan in 2011 at the couple's Mustang home. Police also found a spent shell casing and a left-handed rubber glove wrapped in a bullet-riddled blanket.

The Oklahoman reports (http://is.gd/mvC6Mi ) Bryan didn't display her emotions when the verdict was read. Her lawyer gave her a hug and told her he was sorry.
