More Oklahomans Apply for Gun Licenses than Ever Before

January was a record month for gun license applications in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations reports it received 4,970 initial applications. That's the most ever since the inception of gun licensing in Oklahoma in January 1996.

By comparison, in January 2012, OSBI logged  1,861 initial applications.

The first month the Self Defense Act became law, January 1996, OSBI received 3,256 applications. That next month, February 1996, is now the second highest month for initial applications at 3,949 – more than a 1,000 below last month.

The OSBI has hired more full-time and part-time workers for the Self Defense Unit. The Bureau is also using employees in other divisions of OSBI to help. We will continue to work diligently to process the applications as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The OSBI will not offer any ideas on what is the reason for the increase due to the length of the ntire process of getting a gun license.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A tornado watch is in effect for western and central Oklahoma.

The weather system brought severe thunderstorms to the Altus and Clinton areas, as well as Harper County late Saturday afternoon. There were no reports of rotation as evening approached but the tornado watch lasts until 11 p.m. Saturday.

The dangerous weather is forecast to continue into Sunday night as the system progresses to the east.

The tornado watch area Saturday stretched from eastern edge of the Panhandle to include the Oklahoma City area.

Forecasters warn that the system could also bring large hail.

The National Weather Service in Norman reports tennis ball-size hail along U.S. 62 near the border of Harmon and Jackson counties in the state's far southwest.
