Free Gun Classes For Teachers

“We want to help teachers and other school employees defend themselves
and our children,” said Tim Gillispie, President Of OK2A, a second amendment
advocacy group.

To reach that goal the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association is offering
free gun classes for teachers.

“Teachers or any school employee are welcome to sign up for it,” said Gillispie.
 

Gillispie said  if upcoming
legislation allowing guns in the classroom passes his group wants to make sure
teachers are ready.

“We want to get ahead of that and do the training now.”

The eight hour course includes instruction on gun laws and firearm
training. By the end of the class participants will be ready to apply for a
carry permit.

“This is an opportunity for teachers and school employees to get that
out of the way.”

Many parents support teachers taking the class

“I think it wouldn’t be a bad thing at all. It would make me feel
better. Even if they just knew how the gun worked ,” said one parent.

But not all parents are on board.

“The kids you never know. You turn you back for one second and they
could get to it ,” said Karen Garrison.

Regardless of what happens on Capitol Hill, O-k-2-a is offering two
classes one in Oklahoma City, the other in Tulsa.

Gillespie said  the response has
been overwhelming.

“We're already to the point where the lottery system is going to apply.”

He hopes everyone not just educators takes a course in gun safety.

“No matter who you are or where you work it’s imperative you get
firearms training.”
