Unattended Candle to Blame for Apartment Fire
Fire officials say an unattended candle may be to blame for an apartment fire Monday.
Crews were called to the Pine Bluff Apartments on S. Harvey just after noon Monday.
According to the fire department, a woman was sleeping on a couch with a candle burning on the coffee table next to her. She told investigators that her cats woke her up. She then she smelled smoke and got out of her apartment before calling 911.
Fire officials say the woman's apartment was damaged by the fire and the apartment below her was damaged by water used to put out the flames.
The woman was checked out at the scene by EMSA and taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. No other injuries were reported.
Crews evacuated the building as they worked to find the cause.

McConnell selected for new Air Force tanker base
May 22, 2013 13:56 GMT
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Wichita's McConnell Air Force Base has been selected to be the main operating base for the Air Force's new KC-46A air refueling tanker.
Members of the Kansas congressional delegation issued a joint statement Wednesday announcing the Air Force decision. The aircraft will replace the aging KC-135 fleet flown by crews for the past 50 years.
According to the delegation, the Air Force will base 36 of the new aircraft at McConnell starting in 2016. It also will be investing $192 million in upgrades to the base.
McConnell was chosen over bases in North Dakota, Oklahoma and Washington.
Forbes Field in Topeka was not selected as a site for the Air National Guard base but the delegation said the Topeka location would not be precluded from future refueling assignments.
