Norovirus Increases Across Metro
A stomach virus that has spread across the nation has spiked in the Sooner State.
About 140 cases of the Norovirus have been reported across the country. At the department of public health, experts do not track outbreaks but Dr. Brett Cauthen in the metro said he has treated hundreds of patients.
Health experts said symptoms start one to two days after exposure, and the virus can spread quickly through schools, hospitals and nursing homes.
"We have a stronger Norovirus this year than in previous years," Dr. Cauthen said. "Symptoms include stomach pains, nausea and diarrhea. It is extremely contagious."
"Most healthy people recover just fine but the danger of this virus is that it's so contagious, the traditional flu takes hundreds of particles to infect someone, but the norovirus takes only a few, It is probably the most common cause of food borne illnesses in the in the United States," Cauthen added.
"Treatment is hydration and rest. Prevention is similar to the traditional flu, wash your hands and clean up food preparation areas, The virus can live outside the body for some time, days and even weeks," Dr. Cauthen said.

May 25, 2013 22:59 GMT
KINGFISHER, Okla. (AP) -- Authorities continue to search for a Kingfisher teenager who disappeared after jumping into Uncle John Creek.
Police say 17-year-old Taylor Faine jumped into the creek Thursday and did not resurface. Kingfisher Fire Chief Randy Poindexter told The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/10s2oB6 ) on Saturday that manmade dams have been built in hopes of finding Faine's body.
Authorities say Faine was swimming with friends in an area where no swimming signs are in place because of dangerous currents in the creek.
