Hobby Lobby Delays Contraceptive Coverage
An Oklahoma based business is trying to fight the time limit on its
contraception case, and may have found a way around the new federal
health care law. Under the new health care law, employers are
required to supply insurance coverage for contraception.
Hobby Lobby has been involved in a long battle over supplying the morning after pill. The company claims it should be exempt from providing emergency contraceptives because it's a religious organization. An attorney for the company released a statement saying the company has found a way to delay the insurance coverage that would provide the contraceptives.
According to the statement, Peter M. Dobelbower said Hobby Lobby will shift the company's health insurance plan year and that will delay their requirement to provide the pills by several months.
Hobby Lobby sent Fox 25 the following statement:
“Following Justice Sonia Sotomayor's decision on Dec. 26 denying Hobby Lobby temporary relief from the HHS mandate to provide abortion-causing drugs as part of its healthcare plan, the company faced exposure to penalties beginning Jan. 1. Subsequently, Hobby Lobby discovered a way to shift the plan year for its employee health insurance, thus postponing the effective date of the mandate for several months. Hobby Lobby does not provide coverage for abortion-inducing drugs in its healthcare plan. Hobby Lobby will continue to vigorously defend its religious liberty and oppose the mandate and any penalties.” - Peter M. Dobelbower, General Counsel - Vice President, Legal, Hobby Lobby
