Insurance Commissioner No. 2 User of State-Owned Plane
TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- After Gov. Mary Fallin, Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak is the top statewide official to use state-owned aircraft for travel.
The Tulsa World reports that Doak has used the aircraft to view tornado damage and for speaking engagements and meetings with chambers of commerce, local leaders and consumers.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the costs billed to Doak's agency for the aircraft are $3,462.
Doak's department has come under fire for spending more than $180,000 on high-tech shotguns, bulletproof vests and seven police-package vehicles.
State Sen. Harry Coates, who criticized the weapons purchases, says there needs to be legislation that specifies when an elected official can use the state's aircraft.
Doak says the flights were for legitimate purposes and necessary for him to best serve Oklahomans.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. says it will donate $1 million to the American Red Cross to help in the rescue and recovery efforts in Moore.
The oil and gas company says it's also organizing hundreds of employee volunteers to help in the relief effort.
Chesapeake board chairman Archie Dunham says the company is providing "all possible assistance" using Chesapeake's equipment, machinery and resources. The company is also using its "Operation Blue" employee program that allows workers to volunteer four hours on company time.
Chesapeake says it will expand the Operation Blue campaign to help out in Moore.
