Garfield County Mourns Death of Police Dog
ENID, Okla. (AP) -- A memorial service is being planned for a Garfield County Sheriff's Office police dog that died on New Year's Eve.
Mako, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, had been with the department five years. His handler, Deputy Darryl Beebe, says the dog died after suffering from stomach tumors.
The Enid News & Eagle reports that Mako was trained in both drug detection and patrol.
Beebe says Mako worked for Garfield County and assisted other agencies in the area, including the Enid Police Department, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Waukomis Police Department.
The dog was also used at demonstrations at schools in the county.
