Yukon Mill Close to 'Getting Lit'
Along Route 66 in Yukon you will see the more than 100-year-old flour mill, which may be getting a make-over very soon. A group called the Friends of Yukon's Best Inc has now collected more than 100 thousand dollars in pledges and donations in order to re-light the mill. Currently two signs "Yukon's Best Flour" and "Yukon Mills" sit atop the building, but their bulbs are mostly burned out. The signs have not seen repairs since the 1980s and were officially turned off this past summer. "We are so read to get these signs lit," Pam Shelton, the chairwoman of the Friends of Yukon's Best Inc. said. The group had their first meeting in early January. The group is selling Yukon merchandise and memorabilia as well as putting on fundraisers to collect money for the project. "You have no idea how many people have come in and said, I used to work at the mill, or my grandfather worked at the mill," Shelton added. Their goal is about 150 thousand dollars and they hope to reach it in 2013. Residents of Yukon would like to see the lights lit as well, the Miller still serves as the schools mascot, "It's kind of a historic part of Yukon, I have always really liked it," Bethany Bonds, a Yukon resident said. Once the group reaches their goal both signs will need to be taken down and replaced because of rust. Shelton says they will be designed exactly as they were, only this time, with LED lights.
