Fire at SW OKC Apartment Complex
The Oklahoma City Fire Department rushed to an apartment complex near Interstate 240 and Walker to battle a fire Saturday afternoon. The fire started around 12:30 p.m. at Brighton Place apartments at 7000 S. Walker in Oklahoma City. Crews evacuated about five families as they battled the flames.
"I opened my front door and all I saw was this giant plume of smoke above me," Resident Cathleen Walker said. "I grabbed my laundry basket and computer."
Battalion Chief Al Cothran said firefighters had a little trouble accessing the flames due to high heat but were able to put the fire out within an hour, "There were no injuries, the fire was contained to one unit," Cothran added. The cause of the fire is not yet known, Cothran said, "We have investigators on scene, looking at it, possibly some heating equipment."
Most residents including Cathleen Walker only suffered smoke damage.
"I am kind of upset because my Christmas presents are in there, for my family and friends and everything," Walker said. Neighbors warned her of the flames, something she is thankful for, "I heard people outside screaming and yelling asking if everyone was okay"

May 21, 2013 13:22 GMT
MOORE, Okla. (AP) -- Relief organization Save the Children says it's sending help to families affected by Monday's deadly tornado in Moore.
Save the Children CEO Carolyn Miles says experience shows that children are most vulnerable during emergencies. The organization plans to send kits for shelters to create safe play spaces for children displaced by Monday's deadly tornado.
The organization is also sending hygiene materials for infants and toddlers.
Save the Children has served thousands of children in major U.S. emergencies, including Hurricane Katrina and the 2011 tornadoes in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Joplin, Mo.
