Holiday Packages an Easy Target for Thieves
The Edmond Police Department said it has already received some reports of holiday packages being stolen from the doorsteps. Carriers like UPS and FedEx usually leave items at the door when no one is home to pick them up.
"You're making it easier for or more tempting for somebody, if that's in their nature," Jenny Monroe with Edmond Police said.
Monroe said these kinds of thefts start going up in November.
Edmond Parcel Plus allows customers to ship with any carrier. Workers there said they have already seen the rush in holiday shipping. They say customers can give special instructions when they ship packages out, to make sure they are not easy targets.
"A lot of times we will recommend to someone that if they have a business address that they can send it to, that's a better solution. Because someone's going to have to sign for it and there will be someone there receiving it," Charles Johnson, a co-owner said.
Johnson also suggests coordinating with neighbors, so that they can sign for your items.
If you're item does get stolen, Monroe said you should file a police report.
"Make a police report so you can track that you did buy it and that its missing, so that you can reclaim the loss," she said.
UPS is offering a new service this year called "UPS My Choice." This service allows customers to decide when their packages are delivered. It also sends alerts to the day before packages are going to be delivered, so that id the time doesn't work, it can be rescheduled to another day.
