Univ. of Tulsa Professor Stuck in NY by Sandy
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A University of Tulsa psychology professor who is in New York City for a conference on how the media covers natural disasters is now stuck there because of a superstorm called Sandy.
Elana Newman said she feels safe in Manhattan -- where she was eating dinner with colleagues and friends at what she said was one of the few diners remaining open.
Newman said she could see strong winds -- but that cabs were still in operation and she could see people on bicycles making deliveries.
The National Hurricane Center said Monday night that Sandy is a post-tropical storm and losing strength but still has sustained winds at 85 mph.
Newman is part of a conference of journalists discussing interviewing storm victims after the disaster.

Obama pledges help after Oklahoma tornado
May 21, 2013 00:05 GMT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama has called Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin to express his concern about a monstrous tornado that wreaked havoc in the Oklahoma City suburbs.
The White House says Obama told the governor that he's directed the government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide any assistance she needs. FEMA has sent a special team to Oklahoma's emergency operations center to help out and dispatch resources.
Obama also told Fallin to contact him directly if the federal government can provide additional help.
The White House says Obama's homeland security team is keeping him updated on the situation.
The tornado flattened entire neighborhoods in the southern suburb of Moore with winds up to 200 mph, leaving buildings on fire and landing a direct blow to an elementary school.
