Hearing Delayed for Man Accused in Weleetka Murders
The hearing that will determine if Kevin Sweat goes to trial
for the murders of Taylor Placker and Skyla Whitaker has been delayed
again. According to court records the
hearing, which was originally scheduled for November 5, has been moved to January
28, 2013.
Court documents reveal Sweat told investigators he saw and
shot “two monsters” on the side of a rural road in Weleetka. The girls’ bodies were found in a ditch not
far from the Placker family home.
The Weleetka murders went unsolved for more than three years
until another young woman died. Ashley
Taylor was Sweat’s fiancée, investigators found her remains in a burn pile
outside of the home of Sweat’s father.
Sweat was arrested and charged for that murder in August of 2011. During that investigation family members of
Taylor came forward with information that prompted investigators to investigate
Sweat for the Weleetka case. Investigators
found bullet casings on Sweat’s father’s property that matched ones recovered
from the Weleetka crime scene.
Sweat’s other criminal case has also been continued until
next year. A judge delayed the trial for
Taylor’s murder until June of 2013.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for all three
murders. Sweat has pleaded not guilty to
all the crimes.

Okla. court upholds life sentence in uncle's death
May 17, 2013 21:34 GMT
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma appeals court has upheld the life prison sentence of a 38-year-old man who was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting his uncle to death.
The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals handed down the decision Friday in the case of Patrick Shane Yargee. A jury in Tulsa County found Yargee guilty in the 2010 shooting death of 48-year-old David Willie Harjo.
Authorities alleged that Yargee shot Harjo eight times in a residence in northern Tulsa. Reports filed in the case indicate that the two men had an argument involving a woman before the shooting.
The five-judge court unanimously rejected Yargee's claims that he was denied a fair trial.
Yargee's defense attorney, Stuart Southerland of the Tulsa County Public Defender's Office, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
