Cardiac Arrest Survival Rate
A recent study shows Oklahoma has one of the highest survival rates in the nation when it comes to victims of cardiac arrest.
"For years and years Oklahoma has been number two, number three in the cardiac arrest save rate" says Tony McCarty, EMSA's Operations Supervisor.
The study shows Oklahoma had a survival rate of 38 percent in 2009, and 42 percent in 2010.
While doctors say this is good news, they also say Oklahoma sees an extremely high rate of cardiac arrest patients.
"The prevalence per 100,000 inhabitants are pretty high, staggering actually" says Dr. Jorge Saucedo, a cardiologist at OU Medical Center.
EMSA says two new methods are helping save patients.
They say using a saline solution that's inserted through an IV can help cool a patient's body.
EMSA now also uses a metronome to help keep a consistent compression rate when performing CPR.
Doctors believe the number of cardiac arrest patients will continue to increase, but say watching your weight, and not using tobacco products can help lower a person's risk.
