Talks resume to end Chicago teachers strike

Talks resume to end Chicago teachers strike
CHICAGO (AP) -- Union leaders representing thousands of Chicago public school teachers are back at the negotiating table with the school district to work out the details of a deal to end a week-long strike.
Both sides have said they've arrived at an outline to resolve their contract dispute, which came down to two main sticking points: a new teacher evaluation system and union demands that laid-off teachers get preference for new jobs.
The Chicago Sun-Times says Saturday's talks are taking place at the offices of union attorney Robert Bloch.
Going into the talks, Bloch said there was still a lot of work to be done though agreement has been reached on the most contentious issues.
The union hopes to present the wording Sunday to its House of Delegates for review.
End to Chicago teachers strike is not assured
CHICAGO (AP) -- A Chicago teachers' rally scheduled today isn't a victory dance yet but there is increased optimism that a week-old strike can be settled.
Negotiators sound more hopeful than they have in weeks, announcing they have achieved a "framework" that could bring 350,000 students back to the classroom by Monday.
But the leader of the teachers' union cautions against assuming the nearly weeklong walkout is over until her members have seen the final offer in writing in a meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
Karen Lewis tells reporters that there is still suspicion among the members.
So the rally shapes up as a show of force for organized labor after a string of setbacks, with participants coming from Wisconsin, Minnesota and perhaps as far away as Boston.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A tornado watch is in effect for western and central Oklahoma.
The weather system brought severe thunderstorms to the Altus and Clinton areas, as well as Harper County late Saturday afternoon. There were no reports of rotation as evening approached but the tornado watch lasts until 11 p.m. Saturday.
The dangerous weather is forecast to continue into Sunday night as the system progresses to the east.
The tornado watch area Saturday stretched from eastern edge of the Panhandle to include the Oklahoma City area.
Forecasters warn that the system could also bring large hail.
The National Weather Service in Norman reports tennis ball-size hail along U.S. 62 near the border of Harmon and Jackson counties in the state's far southwest.
