House passes new version of Stolen Valor Act
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress is trying again to make it a crime to lie about military service or to make false claims about receiving military medals.
The House today passed by a vote of 410-to-3 a revised version of the Stolen Valor Act, less than three months after the Supreme Court struck down the original version on First Amendment grounds.
The new bill tries to comply with that ruling by making clear that it applies only in cases where someone is lying in order to get payment or other benefits. Those who misrepresent their military service with the intent of receiving something of value would be subject to up to one year in prison.
Following the lines of the Supreme Court ruling, the law would not punish those who simply wear military medals or decorations that do not belong to them.
The bill now goes to the Senate.
