Sea Launch conducts satellite launch for Intelsat
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- A rocket carrying an Intelsat satellite has successfully lifted off from the oceangoing Sea Launch platform on the equator.
A Sunday statement from Sea Launch AG said the rocket took off from the Pacific Ocean platform Odyssey at 11:55 p.m. PDT Saturday.
Thirty minutes after the launch, the 13,188-pound satellite named Intelsat 21 was in geosynchronous orbit.
Built by Boeing Satellite Systems Inc., the satellite will serve North America, South America and Europe.
The Odyssey platform and the control ship sail from their home port in Long Beach, Calif., to take advantage of physics that allow a rocket to more easily carry a payload to orbit from the equator.
Sea Launch is now headquartered in Switzerland.

SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) -- Authorities say a tornado that severely damaged a mobile home park southeast of Oklahoma City killed a 79-year-old man whose body was found in an open area of the neighborhood.
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth also said that six people who lived in the mobile home park were injured. Between 30 and 35 homes had significant damage, and number of frame homes in the neighborhood also sustained damage.
The storms were part of a severe weather outbreak that stretched from Texas to Minnesota. Twisters were also reported Sunday in Iowa and Kansas.
Forecasters had warned residents about impending severe weather since last Wednesday, and also caution that parts of the nation's midsection will see severe weather on Monday too.
